Aquarium Odds and Ends

The National Aquarium has more than just fish. They have a few creepy crawlies, which are not my favorite kind of animal, but it was fun to get to photograph them in a safe environment.

More Jellies

As I said yesterday, when I like something, I really like it. In fact, I can be very obsessive single-minded about it. Hence, another day of jelly photos.

Jellies

Anyone who knows me knows that when I like something, I REALLY like it. And this week, I really like the photos I got at the National Aquarium in Baltimore! While I can’t claim to be a fish lover, or even a marine life lover, I love photographing them. The jellies hold fascination for me on two counts. First, they are mysterious. By just looking at them, it would be hard to know if they were animals or some freaky plant life. It’s also not immediately obvious how it is they manage to move around, which is of course, mysterious. Second, they are graceful and flowing, which I find absolutely beautiful. Here are a few of my favorite shots:

And finally, my personal favorite of this series.  I love the effect in this shot of the little girl watching the same jelly I am, only on the other side of the curved aquarium. She seems to enter into the mysterious world of the jellies.

Dolphins

At the risk of looking rather schizophrenic, I’m jumping back to some photos I took at the aquarium the other day. This was my third time watching the dolphin show, and I finally got some photos of them I like. It’s a tough shooting environment, because the dolphin theater has a beautiful view of the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, meaning the show is backlit. They lower translucent shades during the actual performance, which helps if you’re just watching the show, but it’s still tricky for photography. Anyway, here are my favorite shots I got this time:

The Octopus that Ate Baltimore

Well, he didn’t actually eat Baltimore, but he does live there…

I took a break from working on my Down syndrome project yesterday to visit The National Aquarium and found this guy partying. It’s one of the few times I’ve ever been to an aquarium or zoo and seen an octopus do anything other than try to hide in a corner.

A Day at the Aquarium

These two photos are from a recent trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Unfortunately, I don’t know who the little boy is; he just happened to be hanging out in front of the same tank I was.
